About the Event
Urban Reverberations: The Utility of Defects and Legends in Motion brings together the work of Roderic “Utility Defects” Hampton and Joseph Smith in an exhibition that celebrates the fractured, layered, and ever-evolving narratives of urban culture.
Hampton, the headlining artist, is known for his abstract collage wall art, sculptural assemblages, reimagined cityscapes, and striking deconstructed sneaker works. His practice transforms the familiar into the unexpected. Sneakers become sculptural relics, skylines collapse into abstraction, and found materials are reconstructed into new forms. Through these works, Hampton explores consumption, memory, and renewal, inviting viewers to find beauty in imperfection and power in reinvention.
Complementing Hampton’s work is photographer and framer Joseph Smith, who presents a selection of 3D photographic collages. His layered, dimensional portraits of sports legends such as Muhammad Ali and Allen Iverson transform iconic imagery into sculptural tributes. Smith’s work grounds Hampton’s abstractions in cultural memory, creating a dialogue between objects…
