Scratching the Surface with Wanda Payne

Join us Saturday, August 23rd, from 2–5 PM for an exclusive afternoon with acclaimed West Philadelphia artist Wanda Payne, presented as part of the extended exhibition Scratching the Surface: Carving the Soul through Ancestral Marks, now on view through September 9th.

Wanda will open the doors to her creative world, sharing the stories, influences, and community roots behind her scratchboard and mixed media works. Known for her bold, abstract mark making and emotional depth, Payne creates pieces that resonate long after you have seen them, the kind of art that becomes an heirloom.

After her talk, watch her bring light out of darkness in a live scratchboard demonstration. Guests may try the technique themselves on temporary practice sheets for a rare, hands on glimpse into the skill and patience each original requires. This activity is for the experience only.
